March 6.  Sam Schmidt Motorsports rookies Travis Gregg and Jaime Camara qualified 1-2 for the season opening Menards Infiniti Pro Series race at Homestead – Miami Speedway and stayed in the 1-2 positions from the start to finish of the race.

The competition for the third spot on the podium was where the action was.  Jon Herb, Al Unser and P. J. Chesson took turns in that position, until Unser went out on lap 22 with mechanical problems and Chesson was taken into the turn three wall by Chris Festa on lap 34.  Fifth place qualifier Jon Herb, who runs his own team (Racing Professionals), and has thirteen Indy car starts, including the Indy 500 last year, collected the points for the third place finish.

Rookie, Wade Cunningham, who was making his first start on an oval track, qualified seventh and finished fourth, after having dropped back to twelfth at the start of the race.  Cunningham turned in the fastest lap of the race, 188.139 mph. (Only Travis Gregg’s qualifying lap of 189.256 was faster.) Cunningham drives for Brian Stewart Racing.

Rookies Jay Drake (Vision Racing), who had started eleventh, finished fifth and third place qualifier Nick Bussell (J. L. West Motorsports) finished sixth.   Marty Roth of Roth Racing finished seventh.

Another rookie, Mishael Abbott, who is with Hemelgarn 91 Johnson Motorsports, and the first female driver in the Pro Series, qualified fourth and finished eighth.
