The new faces were: Chris Festa of Atlanta and Travis Gregg of Camden, Ohio, both driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports; and international drivers Jaime Camara from Brazil, also driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, and Wade Cunningham from New Zealand, driving for Brian Stewart Racing.  Cunningham was the 2003 CIK-FIA World Karting Champion.

In the afternoon session Jay Drake, the 2004 USAC National Sprint Car Champion, although not on the media entry list, made a surprise appearance driving a Brian Stewart Racing car. Jay had just raced at PIR on January 30 in the Copper World Classis USAC National Midget race, finishing second to J. J. Yeley. The fastest lap of the day, 154.841 mph, was turned in by Jaime Camara.

This year the IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series, which was established by Tony George to be a feeder series for the IRL IndyCar Series, will race on the same day, same track, before twelve of the IndyCar Series races.   There are two exceptions.  Their race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the Indy 500 oval will be on May 27, two days before the Indy 500.  The other exception is one additional race for the Menards Infiniti Pro Series, which will be held on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course before the United States Grand Prix Formula 1 race there on Sunday, June 19.
